The following message appeared on the San Diego Atari Computer Enthusiast's
BBS. The originator of the message is quite a competent
programmer/developer for the ST, so I gave his message more ``weight'' than
if just anyone had posted it. Can anyone confirm or dismiss this bug
report:

Subject : TOS 1.4 bugs
Sig(s) : 1 (General news)
A WARNING TO ALL TOS 1.4 USERS!!!
Despite what Atari has said about the 40 folder bug being fixed in TOS
1.4, IT ISN'T! Actually, the "40 folder" problem in previous
versions of TOS may have indeed been fixed, but in reducing the amount
of low memory used by TOS (in attempt to be more compatible with TOS
1.0) another bug was introduced. It seems that the directory buffers
now overlap slightly with the dynamic memory pointer list. This means
that when you have accessed more than about 35 folders and then try to
allocate memory, there is a good chance that the program will bomb
horribly. This is most likely to occur in programs that search all
subdirectories on your disk (like a utility I wrote does).
I STRONGLY recommend using FOLDRXXX.PRG or CACHENNN.PRG in your AUTO
folder. FOLDRXXX.PRG seems to work since the added buffers are put at
the head of the list, meaning that they will be used before the
original 40 (80 actually, since each folder requires 2 buffers). But
one thing to note is that the size of disk buffers in TOS 1.4 has
increased slightly over that of TOS 1.0 & 1.2. To get the requested
number of buffers you must multiply the number of extra folders you
want by about 1.06 (70/66 to be exact) and rename FOLDRXXX with that
number.
Fix a bug, create a bug. That's Atari for you. Oh, well....

Many semiconductor companies have disclaimers that their semiconductors
(of any type) may not be used in medical lifesupport equipment, unless certain
conditions are met.

Ref: Richard E Covert Message: Panasonic Laser Printer Day One
Hello Richard, I also just got my HP Laser Jet IIp on December 8th. Due to the
limited lines on my BITNET mailing system I am unable to share my experience
with the IIp with Spectre GCR, PC-Ditto, TimeWorks DTP and Calamus and DynaCAD
in greater detail with the netter as what you have done. While waiting for the
IIp to print Calamus Documents (Only 1/2 page at a time as I bought mine with
only 512K) one thing flash to my mind. As you all know that the SLM804 uses
the RICOH engine but stripped all the RAM and making use of the Atari RAMs for
printing thus required a minimum of 2MB computer (MEGA2) to print. However,
RICOH also marketing the printer with their own brand name with internal RAMs.
Would it be possible to modify the SLM804 printer interface box to fit to your
Panasonic and my HP IIp so that they can be connected to the Atari DMA port. We
then do not have to wait when using Atari Prg. A switch to select between DMA
and Parallel/Serial will make them versatile & inexpensive printers. Suthipunth

REF: Stacy Laptop
Hello Dave, Your message on Stacy is sure a good news. I also ordered one from
the local Atari Distributor. I plan to put Spectre 128 inside the Stacy as well
as installing J. Allen's Turbo16. Recently there was a message that one Lady
wanted to get Stacy for using with Spectre GCR and Apple/local talk. You did
mentioned that Local talk requires a high speed communication hardware which
doesn't exist in Atari. TOPS has a Flash Card designed to be installed in
the IBM PC slot allowing the PC to communicate with Apple/Local Talk. How about
making something similar plugging to the Atari DMA port?
Thanks, S.Suthipuntha, School of Architecture, National University of Singapore

Ref: Mac Shareware
In response to David Small's comment on the Ref. I do not think that the Mac
Shareware will take away the potential Spectre user. I bought my first Mac
Emulator (Magic Sac V3.0) since December 1986 and follow by V 5.9 up to V.6.1
I also bought Aladin V 1.3e. I recalled that Dave did make few quite favorable
comments about Aladin in GENIE BBS sine 1987. He did mentioned about its nice
Graphics, its ability to format disk within the Mac environment, etc. IMHO I
think that ounce the users of this forthcoming Shareware discover the limita-
tion of 64K ROM emulator, they will definitely go for the 128K ROM Mac Emulator
At present I also own Spectre 128 and Spectre GCR. My Magic Sac and Aladin are
now among my collector items. However it may be of interest to the netter that
the Sun Remarketing Co. selling LISA bundles with "Mac Work Plus" which make
the 64K ROM LISA to run Hypercard, newer Macintosh programs an Sysem/Finders.
I am now using the Spectre GCR but I want the Mac Shareware too. Suthipuntha.

I need a little help with the use of the function rsrc_gaddr(). As I
understand it, I should be able to use it to get the address of various
objects in a tree. Say I have a tree, ATREE, which has an editable text
field in it called MYTEXT. Here is what I normally to do to get the
address of the text field:
OBJECT *atree;
rsrc_gaddr(0, ATREE, &atree);
text_ptr = ((TEDINFO *)atree[MYTEXT].ob_spec->te_ptext;
I should be able to get text_ptr with a call to rsrc_gaddr. What are the
arguments that I should use?

Subject: SCROLLING DOWN THE SCROLLBAR
I was wondering if someone out there would be so kind as to take a
second to explain something to me about scrolling on the ST. The fact
that you could not simply hold down the mouse button on a scroll arrow
was one of the first, and biggest, differences I noticed between the Mac
and the ST long ago when I first got my ST. Recently, however, I seem
to notice that you can indeed scroll down a scroll bar in this manner in
the file selector (and perhaps only sometimes?). After asking about
technical support at WordUp about scrolling in the document window, they
explained that this is due to TOS 1.0 and that TOS 1.4 will allow
scrolling. If this is true, then why can I scroll in the File Selector?
Could someone out there explain whether there is a difference between
TOS's in this regard, and why I seem to be able to scroll sometimes, but
not others? Thanks--
